GEORGIAN PRINCE IN SERBIA:
''I HAVE OFTEN DREAMED OF BELGRADE''
PRINCE DAVIT BAGRATION
HEAD OF THE FAMOUS DYNASTY,
AWARDED THE PATRIARCH WITH AN ORDER
Belgrade is a city that I wanted to see since my childhood, I dreamed about it and I like it very much because one can feel the rich history at every corner. For every Orthodox Christian it’s a great honor and the the spiritual experience of the highest degree to be able to worship the most sacred sites of Belgrade and Serbia.
This is the way Prince Davit Bagration speeks of the capital of Serbia, a descendant of one of the oldest Royal Dynasties in the history of civilization - of Georgia.
Without any fanfare, as was the custom of decades ago when people went out into the streets to greet their guests, a member of one Royal Ramily arrived in Belgrade.
Davit Bagration-Moukhrani Batonishvili, Prince of Georgia, spent three days in the Serbian capital, to meet with the Serbian Patriarch Irinej and visited, as he says, "a large number of holy sites".
The Heir to the famous Royal line of Bagrationi, who ruled Georgia from the 9th century until the early 19th century, when Russia surveyed this country, has awarded The Serbian Patriarch the Order of The Eagle of Georgia and Seamless Tunic our Lord Jesus Christ. The head of the oldest Orthodox Royal Dynasty in the world, because after the adoption of Christianity in 327, Georgia after Armenia became the second country in the world to give this religion the state status, awarded at the Patriarchate of the Serbian Orthodox Church this Order with the blessing of the Georgian Patriarch Ilia The Second.
- In gratitude for the true friendship and benefactoring for the Georgian Orthodox Church and it’s faithful, I have decorated His Holiness the Serbian Patriarch Iririnej with a Grand Collar of the Royal Order of The Eagle - said for "Blic" Prince Davit, and added that he is very happy for the opportunity to meet with the Serbian religious leader.
Beside Patriarch Irinej, holders of this Order are also Patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew and Patriarch Ilija The Second of Georgia, as well as members of some royal families. Similar to the Serbian Monarchy, the fall and return of the of the Dynasty of Bagration was influenced by the communist political system that these two states have accepted. Most of the members of the Georgian Royal Family left this country when, in 1921, The Red Army conquered Tbilisi, and the return to political life of what is now The Republic of Georgia, began in the year nineties of the last century.
- Among the peoples of Georgia and Serbia, there is great similarity and a need to strengthen the spiritual and all other connections. These two ancient and Orthodox peoples have the same religion and similar historical experiences that bring us closer together - Prince Davit said, and explained that one of the common features is "a big problem with endangering of national sovereignty and territorial integrity", ie the problem of Kosovo and Metohija in Serbia , and Abkhazia and South Ossetia in Georgia.
Announcments that Geogia is to join NATO have again raised tensions in this region, as the chances for the war between Russia and Georgia to be repeated.
- This is a very complex question because it is very hard to say weather Georgia will enter NATO at all, taking in to account that firstly a fair refferendum should be held, for the people to have their say. However, the interest of our country is to look in a different direction. Relations between Russia and Georgia have been fraternal for centuries, because we share the same Faith, which is the reason why we should solve all of the problems we had so far through love, and not quarrel – consideres Prince Davit.
Return of the Monarchy
Surveys conducted in Georgia showed that one third of the citizens of this country wants to re-establish the Monarchy instead of the republican system.
- I believe this is possible because the Georgians see that the presidential system in our country has failed, since none of the current Georgian presidents were changed in the elections. In the system as it is currently in Georgia, there is no possibility of the people to freely express their will about it, not only is it the monarchy or a republic, but also of the party that they want to vote for. The political situation in Georgia is a dictatorship - said Prince Davit Bagration.
