H.R.H. Prince Davit
Bagrationi Mukhran Batonishvili of Georgia
SPEECH IN THE HOLY CATHEDRAL CHURCH
OF SAINT DEMETRIOS OF PRINCES ISLANDS*
Your Eminences The Most Reverend Metropolitans
Your Graces The Right Reverend Bishops,
Very Reverend and Reverend Fathers,
Your Eminences, beloved Brethren in our Lord Jesus Christ,
As The Head of The Royal House of Bagrationi of Georgia, I feel the greatest of spiritual joy and immence gratitude to His Eminence The Most Reverend Kirios Iakovos, Metropolitan of Princes Islands, Ipertimos and Exarch of The Propontis and of course, to His All Holiness, Kirios kirios Bartholomew I, Archbishop of Constantinople, New Rome and Ecumenical Patriarch and to His Holiness and Beatitude Kirios kirios Ilia II, Archbishop of Mtskheta–Tbilisi and Catholicos–Patriarch of All Georgia, for this memorable opportunity to take part in these historical celebrations of the Name Day of His Eminence The Metropolitan Kirios Iakovos, as well as at the 20th Anniversary of the Patriarchal service of His All Holiness The Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.
For every trustworthy Orthodox Christian, it is indeed a great honor and spiritual experience of the highest degree to be able to venerate at the most Holy sites of The Ecumenical Patriarchate and the historical and beautiful Holy Metropolitanate of Princes Islands. It is absolutely so for myself too, and as an Orthodox Reader I feel profound humility in my soul, and as a Prince of Georgia, I feel the greatest possible honor in this sacred moment! Those feelings are completely understandable giving the fact that The Royal House of Bagrationi has contributed greatly to the history of the Georgian Orthodox Church and Orthodox Christianity worldwide.
The Kings of our Royal House were very much concerned with strengthening the Orthodox Church, and were constantly working toward this objective. During centuries, Georgian patriarchs and kings co–existed in harmony and The Orthodox Church has canonised many Saints from the Royal House of Bagrationi. Among others: King Davit IV, Queen Tamar, King Demetrio II and King Luarsab II. Many generations have been raised based on the example of their works and their spiritual lives. The Bagrationis were not only Kings, but also outstanding members of religious orders and Patriarchs. Some of the members of the Bagrationi Dynasty were enthroned as Patriarchs of the Georgian Orthodox Church: H.H. Davit II, H.H. Davit V, H.H. Melchizedek II, H.H. Nikoloz VII, H.H. Domenti II, H.H. Domenti IV, H.H. Anton I, H.H. Ioseb and H.H. Anton II.
On this occasion we should also remember the special and firm relations of our ancient Royal House with the Byzantine Empire, and just mention Empress Maria, the wife of Emperor Michael VII Doukas and Emperor Nikephoros III Botaneiates, and the daughter of the Georgian King Bagrat IV of the Bagrationi…
We wholeheartedly rejoice in the rebirth of those Holy traditions and, once again do thank His Eminence The Most Reverend Kirios Iakovos, Metropolitan of Princes Islands, Ipertimos and Exarch of The Propontis, who already is one of the most valuable members of our Royal Order of the Eagle of Georgia and the Seamless Tunic of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Rank of Grand Cross, and take the opportunity to congratulate him once again upon his Name Day awarding him The Medal of Merit of The Royal House of Georgia!
MANY YEARS MASTER!
EIS POLLA ETI DESPOTA!
*Given on 22. October 2011, upon The Feast of Saint Apostle James Alpheus, on the occasion of the Liturgical celebration of The Name-Day of His Eminence The Most Reverend Kirios Iakovos, Metropolitan of Princes Islands, Ipertimos and Exarch of The Propontis in the Holy Cathedral Church of Saint Demetrios of Princes Islands.
